Pioneering Dual-Beam Particle Radiotherapy in Asian Clinical Oncology
Prof. Jiang Guoliang, MD, is an internationally acclaimed radiation oncologist, Senior Chief of Radiation Oncology and Executive Leadership at the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC), and former President of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. A recognized Honorary Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Prof. Jiang has spent over four decades driving precision radiation paradigms across the Asia-Pacific region.
At SPHIC, Prof. Jiang pioneered the simultaneous clinical commissioning of proton and heavy carbon ion beams operating from a single synchrotron accelerator. Utilizing the physical Bragg Peak effect, his clinical protocols achieve sub-millimeter tumor target conformity while delivering up to 3-fold higher relative biological effectiveness (RBE) compared to traditional photon radiotherapy, with near-zero exit dose to adjacent optic nerves, brainstem, and spinal cord.
Prof. Jiang has authored seminal clinical consensus guidelines on particle therapy for inoperable skull base chordomas, chondrosarcomas, mucosal melanomas, and locally advanced adenoid cystic carcinomas. His leadership has established SPHIC as one of the world's most experienced particle treatment hubs, treating over 5,500 patients with long-term local control rates exceeding 85% in previously untreatable radioresistant tumors.

Procedural Frontiers & Department Innovations
Dual-Beam Bragg Peak Commissioning
Pioneered simultaneous pencil-beam scanning calibration for protons and carbon ions, delivering maximum kinetic destructive energy at precise tumor depth while sparing proximal healthy tissues.
Radio-Resistant Skull Base Protocols
Established dose-escalated carbon ion irradiation regimens for clival chordomas and chondrosarcomas abuting the brainstem, elevating 5-year local control rates to over 86%.
Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Precision
Developed innovative heavy-ion boost strategies for salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma with perineural invasion, dramatically minimizing xerostomia and visual impairment.
Pediatric & Re-irradiation Safety
Engineered strict dose-volume constraint models for secondary re-irradiation and pediatric central nervous system tumors, preventing late radiation necrosis.
